A civil lawsuit may be granted class action status if it is determined that a number of individuals could have identical claims against a defendant. In these situations, the Court decides that a single suit on behalf of all affected parties is more prudent than individual suits against the defendant by each affected party. Class action suits are reknowned for their tendency to award tiny judgements to each member of the class; however, the total judgement is usually substantially large as to be punitive to the defendant.
