Sr. Patent Agent/Patent Attorney - HUMAN GENOME SCIENCES

Human Genome Sciences (HGS) is a pioneer in genomics for the discovery and development of new pharmaceutical products. Our goal today is the same as when we were founded in 1992: to create a global biopharmaceutical company to discover, develop, manufacture, and market gene-based drugs to treat and cure disease. We have a significant product pipeline with seven products in clinical development, including drugs to treat hepatitis C, lupus, anthrax exposure, cancer, rheumatoid arthritus and HIV/AIDS. We expect to move three of our key development programs into Phase 3 trials by year-end 2006.

Summary/Description:
Looking for growth opportunities in one of today’s most exciting healthcare research fields?

We are currently seeking a Senior Patent Agent/Patent Attorney to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for protecting HGS\\\' intellectual property. You will manage interference and opposition proceedings, provide opinions, and perform freedom to operate analysis. You will also work closely with scientific teams to define new inventions and manage all aspects of patent prosecution matters, both in-house and with outside counsel.

Requirements:
- At least a MS degree in Molecular Biology, Immunology or equivalent, although a Ph.D. is strongly preferred
- At least 3 years of experience in patent prosecution, opposition, and/or interference practice; strong familiarity with Patent Law; registration to practice before the USPTO
- Possess excellent patent skills, including demonstrated ability to do the following:
- independently formulate and draft appropriate responses to office actions, oppositions, etc.
- develop and implement appropriate strategies for patent families
- successfully interview cases with Examiners
- Opposition/interference experience is a definite plus
- Demonstrated ability to 1) effectively analyze and communicate complex technical and patent issues, 2) manage others and work in a team environment,
3) work well with others at all levels of the organization
- Is flexible, takes the initiative to identify problems and develop creative solutions, and enjoys being challenged
